I don’t completely agree with the slogan “Talk Minus Action Equals Zero,” but it has a grain of truth. A new at-a-glance BES resource summarizes major state bills, making it far easier to contact state legislators (one of the most effective ways of effecting positive change). Learning about and discussing social issues is all well and good. But the gratification of taking effective action is what is actually needed. This resource helps the largest possible number of people do this in the easiest possible way.
“The Maryland Legislative Update 2016” is a product of the Ethical Action Committee, which takes no position on bills or issues and does not recommend support or opposition to any particular legislation (except where indicated). It does, however, provide information on issues it believes are of interest to the membership and conveys background from advocacy groups or news organizations.
The major bills in the following general areas are summarized and updated at least twice a week: Voting Rights for Ex-Felons, Expungement & Mass Incarceration, Police Brutality & Accountability, Solitary Confinement, Democracy Reform, Death With Dignity, Ethical Humanism, and Environment & Sustainability.
Each bill’s committee assignment is also tracked, so knowing which committee your own state legislators are on (via http://mdelect.net) can make anyone an even more effective citizen.
