BESpeak-Off
The Baltimore Ethical Society sponsors its 1st Annual Oratorical Contest at the Society. The BESpeak-Off is a contest for middle school students from Baltimore City. Twenty students (mostly 8th graders) will compete for trophies for themselves and for their school. Topics range from Rosa Parks' explanation of why she refused to change her bus seat to individual poetry written by the students themselves.

Five schools are represented by participants: Lemmel Middle, Lombard Middle,
Dunbar Middle, Pimlico Middle, and The Stadium School. Individual trophies
will go to all students who participate, with special 1st, 2nd and 3rd place
trophies for the winners. A "school trophy" will go to the school of the
"speaking team" that scores the highest points.

Gordon Stills, retired Baltimore educator and 40-year member of the Society,
is coordinating the contest, an outreach program of the Baltimore Ethical
Society. Light fare will be served during the "meet the speakers" portion of the
program.
