>
>1B] Telling Stories for the Children and the Child in Us All led by Fritz
>Williams
>
>Fritz Williams is a storyteller whose children's stories address qualities
>and values that begin to be formed early in life and shape the type of
>thoughtful, responsible, responsive adult one can become. Learn how Fritz was inspired
>to pen these stories and come away with ideas about how to create your own.
>
>Fritz Williams is Leader of the Baltimore Ethical Society and, in that
>capacity, serves as primary speaker, teacher, pastor, and organizational leader. To
>these duties, Fritz brings extensive ministerial and communications
>experience. He has worked as a parish priest in the Episcopal Church, and also as a
>writer and producer at public television stations in Harrisburg, PA, and Detroit,

>members of the press in a way that makes them want to publicize your events.
>
>Dawn Culbertson has seen both sides of the publicity game, since she's a
>professional musician with over 15 years' experience who has played extensively in
>the Baltimore-Washington area and is also a journalist with over 15 years'

>
>Workshop 2 -Arts & Activism - Saturday October 16 - 1 to 2:30
>
>Choose between Workshop 2A - Poets' Ink and Workshop 2B - Creativity for
>Survival
>
>2A] Poets' Ink workshop led by Dennis Barnes
>*Additional editors will include Dan Cuddy, Barbara Simon, and
>Rosemary Klein.
>Poets at every different stage of creative writing - from beginner to
>accomplished - are encouraged to take part in this Poets'
>Ink (PI) workshop. Each poet should bring 2 to 3 poems to the workshop, where
>a professional editor will thoughtfully read and discuss the work with the
>writer. At the workshop the editor generally will choose a poem from each writer
>and that poem will be published in a Poets' Ink broadside printed by the
>Maryland State Poetry & Literary Society. When the broadside is complete, those
>published in it will receive free contributors' copies and will be invited to
>present their work at a publication reading These readings are held in places
>such as the Enoch Pratt Library, Barnes & Noble, The Learning Bank, and The
>Village Learning Place.
>
>In addition Poets' Ink contributors are invited to read in any of the open
>readings that follow the featured readings sponsored by the Maryland State
>Poetry & Literary on the third Sunday of every month at Minas Gallery, such as the
>one on October 17 that is part of the Arts & Activism event.
>NOTE: Ordinarily, Poets' Ink workshops are free. Today's workshop fee is
>requested only to provide support for the Arts & Activism events. All other
>aspects of Poets' Ink, the editing, the publishing, the reading, and the
>contributors' copies are free thanks to the generous support of the Maryland State Poetry
>& Literary Society and the Baltimore Office of Promotion and the Arts.
>
>2B] Creativity for Survival led by Linda Joy Burke
>Creativity for Survival is designed as a vehicle for catharsis for those who
>feel blocked in their creative process. This workshop is geared towards anyone
>who is a human being. The exercises in this workshop serve as metaphors for
>reconnecting to creative memory, which is something that contains all that is
>generous, courageous and childlike. In contemporary mainstream culture, it has
>become increasingly evident that the lasting gifts of imagination are being
>replaced by the more fleeting ones of instant gratification. This shift has made
>many in our culture far less patient with organic ways of interacting and
>creative problem solving. This disconnect shows up in classrooms, in boardrooms,
>and in the work place. Keeping constant connection to the creative process in
>whatever way it shows up for the individual is a vital component to bringing
>humanistic service to cooperative environments.
>In this workshop we'll be doing:
>Facilitated exercises include improvisation exercises, full group music
>making with voice, drums, shakers, bells and lots more interesting instruments,
>moving, writing, reflection and sharing.
>
>Linda Joy Burke is the recipient of a 2002 Distinguished Black Marylander
>Award in Art from the Office of Diversity Resources at Towson University and a
>2004 National Association For Arts Advancement nominee. She has published
>poetry, fiction, op-ed columns, reviews, profiles, and feature stories in numerous
>newspapers, literary publicatons, journals, and anthologies. Her work is
>featured as part of the poetry anthology When Divas Laugh: The Diva Squad Poetry
>Collective. She is co-editor with Jaki Edens of Conversing with Dragons:
>Celebrating the Life and Art of Robyn Weiss. She conducts writing and creativity
>workshops in a variety of venues for students of all ages. She is Poet-In-Residence
>at the Howard County Center for African American Culture and past President
>of the Board of Directors of the Baltimore Writers Alliance.
>
>Workshop 3 -Arts & Activism - Saturday - 2:45 to 4
>————————————————————————————————————————————
>Choose from Workshop 3A - Poetry for Change: The Activist Artist or Workshop
>3B Art at Eye Level: Illuminating the Invisible Community or Workshop 3C
>Activist Drama: The Power of Spoken Word.
>
>3A] Poetry for Change: The Activist Poet led by Karla Mancero and Brian E.
>Langston
>Finding inspiration in and responding to current events is this workshop's
>theme. We all have something we believe in, views we may want to express about
>the world, life in our country or in our community, but we may have trouble
>getting what we want to say out. As William Carlos Williams said: "It is
>difficult / to get the news from poems / yet men die miserably every day / for lack /
>of what is found there." In this workshop we explore ways to express our
>"activist voice" by using news sources such as web sites, magazines, and newspapers
>for inspiration as well as "finding poems" in these same sources.
>
>Karla Mancero has been writing poetry since high school. She has been a part
>of the Zelda's Inferno Poetry Workshop since she moved to Baltimore three
>years ago. Karla has organized featured readings for the Zelda's group and has
>co-organized a showcase of local artists at the Whole Gallery. At the Baltimore
>Ethical Society, Karla facilitated a Poetry Discussion platform, which she
>continues as a small discussion group every other Sunday. Currently, she is
>working on several creative projects with a focus on changing the world...locally.
>
>Brian E. Langston's poems have appeared in Catalyst, Spectrum, and 4x4 The
>Newport Review. He is the founder of Into the Teeth of the Wind, a quarterly
>poetry journal at the University of California, Santa Barbara. While living in
>Santa Barbara, he organized several poetry readings and was a featured reader at
>both the Santa Barbara Poetry Series and the Santa Barbara Book and Author
>Festival. In February he moved to Baltimore, where he masquerades as a computer
>programmer while writing poetry and creating abstract art.
>
>3B] Art at Eye Level: Illuminating the Invisible Community led by Gimme
>Shelter Productions Marcus Colasurdo and other members of Gimme Shelter Productions
>share their experiences creating performances "articulating the condition of
>homeless and its resolution." They also use their performances to raise funds
>for organizations such as Viva House, The Environmental Crisis Center, and
>House of Ruth.
>
>Marcus Colasurdo is a poet and novelist, the author of 10 books including the
>recently published "First of May." He is also the founder of Gimme Shelter
>Productions, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) theatrical group that has been performing
>benefit fundraisers for the past 10 years to aid homeless shelters, food
>programs, after school programs, prison writing workshops, and the like. Colasurdo is
>a teacher, waiter, and bartender who has lived, organized, and written on both
>the East and West Coasts. He has read and performed his work all across
>America. Currently, he divides his time between Baltimore and Northeastern
>Pennsylvania.
>
>3C] Activist Drama: The Power of Spoken Word Poetry led by Ad-lib Spoken word
>is a form of music or artistic performance in which lyrics, poetry, or
>stories are spoken rather than sung. Spoken word is often done with a background of
>music, but emphasis is kept on the performer. Spoken word is often political
>in nature.
>
>Ad-Lib hosts an open mic at Notre Maison, 18 W. 25th Street, from 8 to 11
>p.m. on Thursdays. He has also hosted jazz-poetry-buffets and is a truly
>positive and dynamic force!
>
